Volunteer Information
“Enhancement Days” occur on the 3rd Saturday of every
month from October thru April and end with a Volunteer Appreciation
Day on the 3rd Saturday of May. Please check the schedule of events
page for times and locations and the message board for recent events,
or to ask questions and make announcements.
Sign-in will begin at 8:00am at the dock. New volunteers can fill
out a Volunteer application form in advance to save time at the
dock unless you already have one on file with FDEP. Copies of the
volunteer application form will be available during the sign-in
period. We will start transporting volunteers to the island at 8:30a.m.
Volunteers are welcome to meet at the island or ramp in their own
boat. After all volunteers arrive on the island, a brief overview
of the tasks and allocated responsibilities will be given to the
group. Volunteers will be working around chainsaws and herbicide
in dense vegetation. Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes, hat,
and bring plenty of water! All other field supplies and boat transportation
will be provided. The few hours of work can be labor intensive,
but all participants will enjoy a free BBQ lunch on the island and
a free Spoil Island Project T-shirt. Many volunteers enjoy fishing,
relaxing and taking in the scenery on the island after the work
is completed.
The free BBQ lunch will be served at 12:00pm. Volunteers will arrive
back at the boat ramp at approximately 2:30p.m.
If you are interested in participating in a fun and rewarding outdoor
experience in your community this season, please send an email with
your contact information to the Sign up for Projects page on the
Spoil Island Project website and you will be added to the Enhancement
Days distribution list. You can also contact me, Mark McGee in the
southeast office , at (772) 429-2995 x23 or Jeanene Bengoa
in the east central office , at (321)
634-6148. Please contact us by the 3rd Friday of the month (the
day before) so I can purchase an appropriate amount of food for
the BBQ and accommodate vegetarian diets.
