Meet at Riverview Park ramp, 650 US-1 Sebastian, FL .Located on the Indian River Lagoon at the intersection of Fellsmere Road (SR 512) between US 1 and Indian River Drive. Parking is not available at the boat ramp for volunteers, please park along the street (Indian River Drive between Sebastian Blvd and Coolidge Street) in designated spaces.

Come and help remove exotic invasive vegetation, cleanup and restore islands used for recreation. Stay for a hot dog B-B-Q after restoration activities are completed!! Call Jeanene Bengoa, ECFAP Volunteer coordinator, at (321)634-6148

Indian River Lagoon Spoil Island Volunteers:

The Southeast Indian River Lagoon Spoil Island Enhancement season is about to begin. This year our office will be enhancing two long-term, grant-funded, enhancement sites – one in Indian River County and one in St. Lucie County. Many of you have already been to our Indian River County site (known as IR36) as we have been focusing most of our effort here over the past two years (many thanks to Florida Inland Navigation District). The Southeast Aquatic Preserve office has also recently partnered with St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District to initiate another full-island enhancement on St. Lucie County spoil island SL3. SL3 is immediately adjacent to FAU at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. We will be alternating between the two sites as our dedicated St. Lucie volunteers have been driving to Vero Beach the past couple of years. Mark McGee will be coordinating the enhancement events. He will be assisted each month by either Brian Sharpe or me. Our October event is one of the most ambitious so all three of us will be there to kick off the season. Mark.McGee@dep.state.fl.us

October 18, 2008
IR36 - Maintain walking trail, haul felled Australian pine logs to campsites, install eight educational plant signs along the trail, replace paper kiosk /Adoption Program signage with metal signs, monitor mangrove planting area. Stake down gumbo limbos. Meet at Indian Riverside Park at 8:00 am.

November 15, 2008
SL3 – Remove non-native vegetation (Australian pine, Brazilian pepper,
and carrotwood) along the island fringe using chainsaws and loppers. Replace paper kiosk /Adoption Program signage with metal signs.
Monitor mangrove planting area. Meet at Round Island Park (lagoonside) at 8:00 am.

December 20, 2008
IR36 – Plant and water native vegetation donated by Graves Brothers, nursery, cut internal stumps, maintain walking trail. Monitor mangrove planting area. install eight educational plant signs. Meet at Indian
Riverside Park at 8:00 am.

January 17, 2009
SL3 – Improvement of the islands east camp site – replace/repair picnic
table and clear non-native vegetation. Meet at Round Island Park (lagoon-side) at 8:00 am.

February 21, 2009
IR36 – Plant and water native vegetation donated by Graves Brothers
nursery, cut internal stumps, maintain walking trail. Meet at Indian Riverside Park at 8:00 am.

March 21, 2009
SL3 – Remove non-native vegetation (Australian pine, Brazilian pepper,

April 18, 2009
IR36 – Pull / treat new growth of non-native species, maintain the
walking trail, bird surveys. Plant and water native plants. Meet at Indian
Riverside Park at 8:00 am.

May 16, 2009
Volunteer Appreciation Day Picnic held on IR36. Meet at the Indian
Riverside Park boat ramp at 10:00 and we will have you back by 2:00
