Upcoming Events
We're now on Facebook! The Spoil Island Working Group has just launched a Facebook Page as another way to keep volunteers in the loop for upcoming events and projects. Look for major updates in the fall when Spoil Island Work Days resume.

Saturday, June 30, Sebastian Spoil Island Cleanup Event (8am-4pm):  “Micro-marine debris” is a serious problem in our state waterways, along our shorelines and on our spoil islands. These small or “micro” pieces of plastic, glass and other debris are ingested by animals, woven into nests and disrupt the ecosystem. As a result, the Florida Department of Agriculture, along with Sembler & Sembler, is hosting a “Micro-Marine Debris” training and cleanup event to help alleviate this problem.

The day will begin at 1528 Indian River Drive, Sebastian, with a classroom training activity, followed by lunch. Volunteers will then be transported via boat to a spoil island where the cleanup activities will take place. All training materials, personal protection equipment, cleanup tools, lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided. Spaces are limited. Please be sure to sign up in advance to reserve your spot. To RSVP Contact Bsembler@aol.com or call 772-473-1577.

The Spoil Island Project is the result of the Spoil Island Working Group (SIWG), which consists of Federal, State, and County government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The SIWG was created to implement the Indian River Lagoon Spoil Island Management Plan put forth by the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND). This website serves as a valuable resource where both governmental organizations and the general public can effectively coordinate efforts towards managing the spoil islands for recreational and environmental interests.
